How Google Ads match types work

Broad match: keyword

Widest reach. Google shows your ad for searches it considers related, including synonyms and themes. Pairs with Smart Bidding when you have enough conversion data.

Phrase match: "keyword"

Triggers when the search includes the meaning of your keyword. Tighter than broad, looser than exact. The workhorse for most accounts.

Exact match: [keyword]

Triggers only on searches with the same meaning as your keyword. Best for high-intent terms where you want maximum control.
